Architecture, Culture, and Community.

How can architecture bridge the past and the future? That is one of the questions that drives 1014: Past and Future, an exhibition about 1014 Fifth Avenue, a small building with a large cultural footprint. Today, the Beaux-Arts-style townhouse—one of the last of its kind along Museum Mile—stands on the cusp of change. Colorful snippets from the building’s history as a former ambassador’s home and the German cultural center, Goethe House New York, are presented together with thoughtful renovation proposals by David Chipperfield Architects and other prestigious designers.

Exploring the intersection of architecture, community, and culture, the exhibition offers a glimpse of a new cultural space in the making. The house, built in 1907, is reimagined as a one-of-a-kind hub for public programs and live-in fellows. Get to know the history of a building and its urban context with lectures and moderated talks by academics, architects and historians.
As part of Archtober and Open House New York, the building was opened to the public in October 2021. All talks were recorded and are available here.
